As of January 1, 2022, students in Illinois are allowed up to five mental health days as excused absences from school, without the requirement of a doctor’s note.
Background
This policy was implemented in response to growing concerns about student mental health, recognizing that stress, anxiety, depression, and other emotional challenges were significantly impacting student well-being and academic performance.
Goal
The goal of this policy is to provide students with the opportunity to prioritize their mental health without stigma or barriers.
Can Students Use Mental Health Days Consecutively?
If a student requests a second consecutive mental health day, a school counselor is required to contact the family and, if necessary, refer the student for professional support. This measure aims to ensure that students who might need additional assistance were identified early and connected to appropriate resources.
